The province of Misamis Occidental has the Mindanao Sea to the northeast, Iligan Bay to the east, and Panguil Bay to the southeast. Its coast nonwithstanding, Misamis Occidental’s terrain is mostly hilly.
One of the area’s top draws is a mini zoo within a mangrove forest. You can find it at the Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park. At the Baliangao Wetland Park, you’ll also see a variety of mangrove trees. Many of the species here are endemic to the Philippines, and endangered.
Another place worth visiting is a man-made sanctuary for rescued dolphins – Dolphin Island.
And then there’s Lake Duminagat, a crater lake that was formed by volcanic eruptions. It’s supposed to have healing powers.
Misamis Occidental’s culture is a unique marriage of indigenous cultures and Spanish influence. Most festivals celebrate both the traditional customs of the Subanens and a Catholic patron saint. There are also marks of indigenous culture in St. John the Baptist Church and the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Jimenez. The Fuerte De La Concepcion Y Del Triunfo – an 18th-century fort that protected Ozamiz City from pirates – is said to have a carving of the Virgin Mary that grows.
